Help keep the flame wars under control

I think the oppenness and freedom of speech and thought is something that has been changed over time, as earlier days of the internet, it was still hard to grasp mentally how the cyberspace works and how little attachment it used to have to their personal lives. As there were no ties to their real life in earlier times of the internet, people were a lot more expressive or even exessive in voicing out their anger, maybe even "trolling" other's as a means of relief. Nowadays many social accounts are tied to eachother and a lot more info is put out on the internet, making it possible in some cases to track down the specific person behind an account or user that has commited a certain action. Thus people being a lot more respectful in general areas of the social platforms, but there are still sites where people use anonymous accounts to type or express unfathomable thoughts.

However there are advantages of igniting a flame war to certain individuals. Common way nowadays to gain gossip (one could call it advertisment), is by igniting flame wars, whether for profit or infame. An evil doer could also gain amusement out of watching others bicker amongst eachother, while eating popcorn. There is also a strategical reason for extinguishing or igniting flames, for example in games. If someone wants to enjoy "destroying" opponents without the opponents ending the game by forfeiting, then he could try to ignite flames by cussing out his opponents, so that the opponents keep playing the game and typing in chat to respond, due to their anger. When not talking anything or soothing your team in a game, can keep or raise your teams morale to keep playing and win. These strategies can also be used to achieve goals outside of cyberspace, but I'm not going to dwell on that.

In conclusion, while in a lot of cases helping to extinguish the flames is the best option, depending on your objective, igniting could be benefitial. Which is why adding fuel or igniting flames for a reason other than not being able to keep control of your emotions exist and why attempts of such actions will keep happening all around the globe and cyberspace.
